Hireology's September 2026 platform data covers over 700,000 applicants and nearly 24,000 hires across thousands of healthcare, automotive, and hospitality employers. Career sites produced more hires than any single source at 6,461. QR codes converted at 52%, while internal sourcing achieved 31%. Meanwhile, job boards generated 480,847 applicants (65% of total volume) and converted at 2%.

The gap between internal sourcing and job boards narrowed from 17x in August to 15x in September, while QR codes widened theirs from 20x to 25x on a small base of 575 applicants. Job boards remain essential for top-of-funnel reach, but the operators driving the highest ROI treat job boards as the awareness layer rather than the entire hiring plan. The sourcing data below breaks down where September's hires originated across the platform.

What the BLS Reported

  • Headline Growth: Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 29,000 in September, below the 45,000 monthly average over the prior 12 months.
  • Unemployment Rate: Held at 4.2%, inside the 4.1% to 4.3% range it has stayed in since March.
  • Downward Revisions: July's reported gain of 21,000 jobs was revised to a loss of 10,000, and August's gain of 162,000 was revised down to 133,000. Combined, the prior two months are 60,000 jobs lower than initially reported.

Last month's data pointed to a stronger labor market than operators expected. The revisions reverse that read: hiring is slowing. A softer market does not make hiring easier. Active candidates have options, and they move on when a response is slow.

Postings did not slow with payrolls. Lightcast counted 4.05 million unique job postings in September, up 12% from 3.60 million in August, while payrolls added 29,000 net jobs. Posting volume that outruns net job growth is consistent with employers refilling seats as well as adding them. Postings stayed live a median of 9 days.

Where the Hires Come From

Job boards combined produced 480,847 applicants (65% of total volume) and yielded 10,120 hires (42% of the total). Meanwhile, career sites produced the single largest share of hires at 6,461, up from 4,925 in August. Eleven referral campaigns generated 109 referrals and 40 hires.

The data illustrates the same dynamic as August: high-intent channels like QR codes and internal sourcing convert at 25x and 15x the rate of job boards. Job boards perform best as essential top-of-funnel infrastructure, while targeted channels act as high-velocity conversion tools. For operators looking to expand their sourcing mix, point-of-service QR codes (at front desks, waiting areas, or intake desks) offer a high-converting avenue to test against September's 52% benchmark.

Industry Spotlights

Healthcare: Where the Nurses Are Moving

  • The Data: BLS put September's health care gain at 17,000, with hospitals (+12,000) and ambulatory care (+13,000) growing while nursing and residential care facilities lost 9,000. Lightcast counted 183,796 unique RN postings in September with a 9-day median duration. General medical and surgical hospitals posted 140,419 unique jobs with an 8-day median, the second-shortest among the ten most active industries. Caregiver and CNA were again the top two roles hired on the Hireology platform, with Registered Nurse sixth.
  • The Opportunity: Post-acute operators are competing for clinical candidates against employers that are growing and moving faster. Shift-based candidates apply on their phones between shifts and take the first employer who responds. Pairing internal sourcing (31% platform-wide against 2% for job boards) with asynchronous screening lets candidates who work nights and weekends complete interviews on their own schedules. Automotive: Q4 Service Drive Pressure

  • The Data: Service Technician and Service Advisor ranked fourth and fifth among roles hired on the Hireology platform in September, with Lot Attendant/Porter and Detailer eighth and ninth. Lightcast counted 28,459 unique postings for automotive service technicians and mechanics with a 9-day median duration, and projects 837,000 annual openings in skilled trades through 2035 from retirement attrition alone.
  • The Opportunity: The dealerships that close technician roles review applicants daily, reach out within hours, and build pipelines that don't depend on the same small group of active candidates: apprenticeships, vocational school partnerships, and employee referral programs. Hospitality: Holiday Hiring on a Flat Market

  • The Data: Housekeeper ranked seventh among roles hired on the Hireology platform in September, ahead of Line Cook (twelfth) and Banquet Server (seventeenth). Lightcast counted 21,920 unique server postings, 21,729 housekeeping postings, and 24,312 restaurant cook postings, with median durations of 9 days for servers and housekeepers and 11 days for cooks. Food service manager postings stayed live a median of 15 days. Posting duration shows how long an ad stays up, not how long a role takes to fill, but the gap shows where hiring stalls.
  • The Opportunity: The roles that stay posted longest are the managers who run the floor, and those same managers do the screening. In a flat market the first employer to respond wins the candidate, so the operators who keep up screen from their phones and move candidates into onboarding in the first week. Four Focus Areas for October

  • Audit Your Channel Performance: Analyze your conversion rates by source. Hireology's September data shows internal sourcing at 31% and QR codes at 52% against 2% for job boards. Combining the top-of-funnel volume of job boards with the high conversion of internal channels creates a balanced, resilient sourcing strategy.
  • Expand Technical Pipelines: Address the long-term trade shortage by investing in structured apprenticeship programs and internal development pathways for entry-level automotive roles alongside active recruitment.
  • Match Interview Capacity to Candidate Volume: Candidates grew 27% from August to September while interviews fell 3%, and 1,088 interviews were still lost to cancellations and no-shows. Aim for interview confirmation within 24 hours of application to capture candidate momentum before schedule conflicts or competing offers arise.
