Hireology's August 2026 platform data covers over 600,000 applicants and 20,000 hires across thousands of healthcare, automotive, and hospitality employers. Career sites produced more hires than any single source at 4,925 hires. QR codes converted at a remarkable 39%, while internal sourcing achieved 34%. Together, those three channels generated 7,529 hires from 87,736 applicants, a 9% blended conversion rate. Meanwhile, job boards generated 408,240 applicants (66% of total volume) and converted at under 2%.

That contrast highlights August's most actionable opportunity for leadership teams. Job boards remain essential for top-of-funnel reach, but the operators driving the highest ROI treat job boards as the awareness layer rather than the entire hiring plan. The sourcing data below breaks down where August's hires originated across the platform.

What the BLS Reported

  • Headline Growth: Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 162,000 in August, more than five times the 31,000 monthly average posted over the prior 12 months.
  • Unemployment Rate: Held steady at 4.1%.
  • Upward Revisions: July's reported loss of 23,000 jobs was revised upward to a gain of 21,000. June was also revised up by 11,000, to +31,000. Combined, the prior two months added 55,000 more jobs than initially reported.

The labor market has proven even stronger than earlier data indicated. The intense candidate competition operators felt on the ground this summer was real, and it signals a strong, competitive environment heading into fall.

What It Means by Sector

  • Hospitality Operators: Food services and drinking places added 59,000 jobs in August after three months of losses, nearly five times the prior monthly average. That rebound lands at the start of fall, when competition for front-of-house and kitchen candidates is already running high. Scaling up high-volume sourcing and onboarding now gives teams a major competitive edge.
  • Healthcare Operators: Health care added 13,000 jobs, with home health care services adding 11,000 positions and hospitals adding 8,000. Demand remains resilient, making speed and process efficiency the primary leverage points for filling open roles.
  • Automotive Dealerships: The August headline and July revisions reinforce a long-standing reality: the structural shortage in service departments isn't tied to monthly shifts in BLS data, but to a candidate pool that has struggled to keep pace with demand. At 4.1% unemployment, skilled technicians have choices, making responsive outreach and fast-moving recruitment essential.

Where the Hires Come From

Job boards combined produced 408,240 applicants (66% of total volume) and yielded 7,897 hires (40% of the total). Meanwhile, career sites produced the single largest share of hires at 4,925, and internal sourcing plus transfers combined for 3,417 hires from 15,265 applicants, a robust 22% combined conversion rate.

The data illustrates a clear dynamic: high-intent channels like QR codes and internal sourcing convert at 18 to 21 times the rate of job boards. Job boards perform best as essential top-of-funnel infrastructure, while targeted channels act as high-velocity conversion tools. For operators looking to expand their sourcing mix, point-of-service QR codes (at front desks, waiting areas, or intake desks) offer a proven, high-converting avenue to test against August's 39% benchmark.

Industry Spotlights

Healthcare: Accelerating the Path from Application to Hire

  • The Data: NSI's 2026 data puts average time-to-fill for an experienced RN at 78 days nationally. Lightcast's August posting data shows 307,191 RN postings nationally (149,400 unique) with a median duration of 11 days.
  • The Opportunity: Caregivers and CNAs—the top two hire roles on the platform in August—often apply on mobile devices between shifts and value swift responses. Health systems can capture this talent by pairing high-converting channels (internal sourcing at 34%, career sites at 6%) with asynchronous screening tools, allowing shift-based healthcare workers to complete interviews on their own schedules. Automotive: Building Tomorrow's Workforce Alongside Today's Hiring

  • The Data: Over 25% of skilled trade workers are 55 or older, with Lightcast projecting 837,000 annual openings through 2035 from retirement alone. In August, technician postings reached 44,386 nationally (24,923 unique) with a 12-day median duration. Service Technicians, Service Advisors, and Sales Consultants all ranked among Hireology's top roles hired.
  • The Opportunity: Winning dealerships combine fast-response workflows for active candidates with long-term talent creation. By reviewing technician applicants daily and providing high-touch outreach, dealerships protect immediate candidate velocity—while apprenticeship programs, trade school partnerships, and internal growth paths for lube technicians build a reliable talent pipeline for the future. Hospitality: Protecting Margin by Reducing Turnover Frequency

  • The Data: BLS JOLTS data puts the quit rate in accommodation and food services at 4%, double the 2% private-sector average. SHRM estimates the cost to replace a frontline employee at $4,700. For a 50-person team, a 4% monthly turnover rate equals two departures a month and $9,400 in recurring costs. Lightcast's August data logged 51,508 cook postings (12-day median), 34,156 housekeeping postings (11-day median), and 30,821 server postings (12-day median), with Server and Housekeeper ranking among the top-10 platform hires.
  • The Opportunity: Because hospitality managers balance intense daily operational demands, giving them mobile-first hiring tools designed for 10-minute check-ins enables fast screening and onboarding—reducing tenure gaps and stabilizing long-term staffing costs. Four Focus Areas for September

  • Audit Your Channel Performance: Analyze your internal conversion rates by source. Combining the top-of-funnel volume of job boards with the high conversion of internal channels (34%) and QR codes (39%) creates a balanced, resilient sourcing strategy.
  • Streamline Healthcare Offer Workflows: With RN job postings averaging 11 days live against a 78-day time-to-fill, mapping and removing administrative delays between final interviews and formal offers helps health systems secure qualified candidates faster.
  • Expand Technical Pipelines: Address the long-term trade shortage by investing in structured apprenticeship programs and internal development pathways for entry-level automotive roles alongside active recruitment.
  • Shorten Time-to-Interview to Curb No-Shows: Reduce candidate drop-off by aiming for interview confirmation within 24 hours of application, capturing candidate momentum before schedule conflicts or competing offers arise.
