So, we've made it. March is over and we're down to the final four NCAA Men's Basketball teams battling it out for the number one spot. Who will it be? The Badgers, Spartans (Go Big Ten! - I'm a Purdue grad), Wildcats or Blue Devils? Come Monday night, we'll have a champion. As exciting as March Madness is, the final four teams aren't the only "four" things that matter. Having a work environment filled with happiness and engagement is just as exciting.

4 Truths You Need When Hiring For Culture Fit

1. Core Values

We say it time and time again. Core values are exactly what they sound like - they are the "core" of your business. They are essential to running a successful company and without them, you have nothing to shape and build a team off of. Once you establish these values, it'll make hiring much more simple as well. If one of your values is "work hard, play hard" and your candidate tells you they will work until 8pm every night, no problem, then maybe they aren't the best fit for the culture you are trying to build. 

2. An Evaluation Process

According to an article in Inc. Magazine, "Once you identify and agree on 3 to 4 cultural pillars, you then need to discuss how you are going to uncover the candidates' correlation to those pillars. You can't rely solely on their own words. You must search for 3rd party validation. References are a start and can prove very effective when you ask the right questions."

3. Leadership

Leadership transforms potential into reality. We all have ideas running around in our brains, but it takes direction, organization and execution to really see them come to life. Having a team of leaders you can trust is the starting point when trying to build your business and company culture.

4. Accountability

Whether you like it or not, you are the ultimate decision maker. Your leadership team will help you come up with the cultural core values, however they will not be finalized until you say so. Be confident and take accountability for whatever decision is made. When it comes down to it, this is the culture you want for your business. If an employee comes around and he or she doesn't mesh with the rest of the group, it might be best to let that person go. Stand by your values and hold true to them day in and day out.

We talk a lot about culture, but the truth is, it's the root of your organization. You want employees to enjoy coming to work. You want employees who are engaged and truly care about the success of the company. It will take some tough decision-making and trial and error, but it will be worth it when you have an office full of smiling faces every day.
