Mastering Social Recruiting with Twitter

social recruiting tweetsIf you don’t know this by now, you might want to get with the times: Twitter is a big deal when it comes to recruiting. According to a recent article by Software Advice, "…studies show that 76% of job seekers use Twitter to look at company profiles for new opportunities and 58% of them actively use Twitter throughout their entire job searching process.”

Grabbing the attention of potential employees takes effort and if you’re not already using social media, (let alone Twitter) then you’re only making the search process harder for yourself. It's increasingly common for companies to utilize Twitter for recruiting purposes. It’s an easy way to extend your reach and connect with more potential job candidates.

But if so many other companies and competitors are already using Twitter to attract candidates, how can you set your company apart from the crowd?

7 Steps for Better Tweets

Mastering Twitter for recruiting isn’t hard; you just need to know how to take full advantage of everything Twitter has to offer. According to Padraig O’Connor, a highly respected marketer who specializes in digital and social marketing, there are several ways you can write “posts that will gain the maximum exposure from potential candidates.” Here are the seven steps O’Connor recommends following while posting job openings on Twitter:

  1. “Use a job search related hashtag”

Using hashtags like #OpenPosition or #JobOpenings helps reveal your tweet to those looking for jobs. You can also add a hashtag relative to your specific job opening, such as #RubyEngineer if you’re looking for tech engineer with experience in writing applications with Ruby.

  1. “Hashtag the job location”

This might seem like a no brainer, but many companies forget to include the job location. Whether you’re hiring for an on-site or off-site job, be sure you include that information in your tweet. For example, #Chicago or #DowntownChicago would be an appropriate hashtag for an open position here at the Hireology office. But if we were hiring for one of our off-site positions, we’d add something like, #OffsiteJob or #WorkFromHome.

  1.  “Link directly to the job posting”

Always have a direct link to your job posting. Twitter only allows you to type 140 characters per tweet, so use that space wisely. The best way to save space while adding a link to your full job post is by using a site like Bitly.com, which shortens your link so it’s not so long.

  1. “Tweet at job dedicated Twitter accounts”

As O'Connor recommends, “You should also tweet at dedicated Twitter accounts by including them in your tweet. Two examples of these are @jobs4NYC (New York) or @jobfairy (Ireland). You can find others in your area by doing a search on Twitter. By mentioning them in the tweet or in the comment section under your tweet, hopefully they will retweet your tweet meaning their many followers will see it.”

  1. “Add an advantage or job benefit to the tweet”

This is another great way to grab the attention of potential candidates. If your company offers great benefits, an awesome work culture, perfect location, etc., then let people know about it. Sometimes, the benefits are what job seekers look for first, especially millennials.

  1. "Add a hashtag unique to your company”

Using a hashtag specific your business allows your recruiting tweet to stand out from all of your other tweets. For example, using something like #JobsAtHireology or #HireologyOpenings would work great for our tweets concerning any open positions and help potential candidates find out job tweets quicker.

  1. “Add a call to action”

The last thing you should include in any social recruiting tweet is a CTA. You want potential candidates to click on the link to your job board or company website that has the job posting and/or application. The best way to do this is by using action words such as “click here to apply” or “learn more.”

Take advantage of the endless amount of job seekers on Twitter these days. If you know how to craft the right social recruiting tweet, then you’re bound to get a good chunk of resumes heading toward your inbox.
