How Technology Is Changing the HR World

In countless ways, technology influences not only the decisions we reach, but also how we reach them. From mobile devices to Web-based platforms, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find an industry that hasn’t been impacted by digital technology.

Advances in technology have come about because there’s a need to manage high volumes of data. Franchisees are also looking for ways to make better decisions as a result. It’s no different in human resources departments. Specifically, franchisees depend on having access to the right HR tools that will help them grow their business.

We’ve moved way beyond just posting jobs in the want-ads section in the newspaper and hoping our dream candidate comes walking through the door. Technological advancements have had a major impact on hiring and recruiting, and these are just a few of the ways you can benefit:

Turning the Process on Its Head

One of the ways forward for franchisees looking to find the best talent is leveraging technology that allows for a more qualitative approach to recruiting. For instance, Lou Adler, CEO of search and training firm the Adler Group, told Inc. magazine that many types of HR software use strict coding to eliminate potentially strong candidates on the basis of the number of years they’ve spent in a particular role. Other kinds of technology parse information in an online profile or application to see if the job seeker has used the “right” keywords in his or her resume and cover letter.

This approach essentially makes hiring a process of elimination, which isn’t necessarily the most efficient use of your time. If you want to hire a rock star, you probably don’t want to sift through hundreds of applicants who aren’t qualified. Instead, HR technology helps decision-makers analyze candidates’ information and data to anticipate future success in a specific position. By doing so, franchisees can focus on the people who are most likely to fit a desired role.

Anytime, Anywhere Connections

One of the most glaring ways that technology has influenced the world of HR can be seen with Web-based resources. According to the LinkedIn Talent Blog, job seekers are spending an increasing number of hours on the Internet, using tools like social networks and online portals to discover new career pathways and research brands. In combination with mobile devices, online resources can help franchisees connect with job seekers regardless of time and location.

Additionally, video tools like Skype have made it easier for franchisees to connect with job seekers and learn more about them, especially if they live a significant distance away from the prospective job location. It allows you to more accurately gauge responses to questions and analyze body language without even being in the same room. It also gives multiple decision makers the chance to interview an applicant and make recruiting more collaborative.
