How Your Business Can Attract Gen-Y Talent

It feels like a different survey about the priorities of Gen-Y is released every single week. You only have to look at the responses to see pay is less of a priority to Millennials, who are starting to look for things like flexibility when choosing a job. Peter Ames from Office Genie looks at how your business and its working environment can help attract sought-after Gen-Y talent.

Be flexible

One thing that always seems to come up when any report into Gen-Y workers is released is that they love flexible working. In fact, the recent Millenials and the Future of Work report found a whopping 84% of Gen-Y workers in traditionally well-paid corporate roles would quit in order to pursue more flexible options.

It’s true. As a Millennial myself, it’s great to have the ability to work longer Monday-Thursday and leave a little early on Friday. Similarly, being able to work from home every so often gives staff the option of tackling a lengthy to-do list without the distractions of the office!

Be inspiring…

millennials in the workplace A recent survey conducted by JobBuzz found 27% of Gen-Y workers most wanted their boss to be a good motivator.  Other appealing qualities in a boss were: Someone who is understanding; the ability to allow workers to make their own decisions; and a democratic approach.

So, if you want to attract Gen-Y talent to your business, encourage senior staff to be forward-thinking and inspirational. People don’t want to deal with a dictator or (God forbid) a David Brent-esque bumbling ‘best mate’.

Why limit this to just inspirational staff? An increasing number of businesses are choosing to brand their offices. This can both impress potential employees and help keep them happy motivated by providing a space that encourages them to live and breathe your company. A really unique workspace, that’s well designed with great features, can be an inspiring place in which motivated staff can produce their very best work.

Ann Clarke of Claremont Group Interiors said, “Your workplace can be a key driver in attracting and retaining the best staff too.  It’s really about how your office environment makes your people feel…it’s more about values, vision and behaviours and finding ways to encapsulate and reflect your company culture.”

Be collaborative

Branding isn’t the only way office design and layout can help you attract the best Millennial talent. The Yahoo! What Millennial Workers Want report found two-thirds of the Gen-Y workers preferred in-person conversation with their employees, rather than digital communication such as email or chat.

There are a whole host of ways this can be encouraged in the workplace. You could set aside some collaborative working areas, or an informal meeting room where staff can sit, chat and generally get creative.
