Hireology PSA: Why are you still using Internet Explorer?

Posted by Erin Borgerson on May 2, 2013

internet explorer is horrible

We are interrupting our regularly scheduled educational blog posts to bring you a Public Service Announcement, courtesy of a recent gripe by our Chief Technology Officer, Attila Domokos

Almost everyday we get a complaint from a user about an issue with our platform that ends up being an issue with the Internet Explorer browser. We spend hours a week diving into our app, with heart-pounding suspense thinking something is terribly wrong, and it ends up being a simple browser issue.

Usually it goes something like this:

Customer Support: "Hireology, this is Tom*, how can I help you?"

User: "Uh your app isn't working, I can't see the button"

Customer Support: "Oh no! (silently panics while trying to search for our CTO's extension so he can alert him of the issue) Hmm which button are you referring to?"

User: "The one at the bottom of the page, I think my internet is cutting it off"

Customer Support: (Breathes a silent sigh of relief) "Would you happen to be using Internet Explorer?"

User: "Ohhh... Yeah I guess I am, should I switch to something else?"

Customer Support: "Yes, please try Chrome or Firefox." (Makes the "throat cutting" sign to the CTO who is rapidly typing from across the office)

User: "Oh! I see the button! It worked! Damn you Internet Explorer.."

Customer Support: "We get that a lot, happy hiring!"

And so another unhappy IE user is converted. But why, why, why are people still using Internet Explorer? Is it because it is conveniently programmed into their computer? Do they not understand they can download several other browsers? Is IE comforting to them?

Whatever the reason, surfers are still using IE, Hireology is here to tell you, it needs to stop! The simple fact is, Internet Explorer does some weird stuff to our app. It makes buttons disappear, fonts look wonky, and other annoying misplaced object float on your screen. It's enough to make our developer crazy!

describe the imageWhile looking for horror stories about Internet Explorer I stumbled upon this hilarious blog called, "Why do Geeks hate Internet Explorer So Much?"  They say that web designers and developers create an awesome web page and check it on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera and it looks great! And then they open up IE and (this is their quote) "the page looks like somebody put it into a blender and hit the Whip button." Ouch.

Here at Hireology we tell people daily that the app functions better on browsers such as Chrome and FireFox. In fact, people who use Internet Explorer tend to be less productive than those who don't because of it's speed (or lack thereof) and security issues.

So if this PSA didn't convert you, I don't know what will! Maybe a chat with our head developer, who will be sure to clue you in on the right browser.

Millennials are advocates for Chrome and FireFox, you should probably know how to hire them as well. Meet Millennial Mike
