Countdown to the HR Tech Conference: Get to Know Chicago

Posted by Erin Borgerson on September 27, 2012

This is the first of a three part series about the 15th Annual HR Technology Conference taking place October 7th-10th at McCormick Place in Hireology's hometown of Chicago.

Flight booked? Check.

Hotel accomodations made? Check.

Mapquest-ing, iternary-creating? Need to do.hr tech conference chicago

Laundry, packing, drop the dog off at parent's house? Need to do.

The conference is just over a week away, are you ready?  Chicago sure is. And so are we! The Windy City is home to Hireology and we want to extend the warmest welcome to all HR Tech Conference Attendees with a "Get to Know Chicago Guide."

Getting There

So how are you getting here? Are you flying into O'Hare? Midway? Rather than spending $40 on a cab to get from O'Hare to downtown ($25 from Midway to downtown), why not take public transportation?  It's much cheaper than driving, and depending on the time of day, quicker too.  The trick is to purchase a CTA Unlimited Fare Card.  Rather than spending $2.25 each time you hop on the "El" or grab a bus, you can buy a one, three or seven day unlimited ride pass for a flat rate. No matter which airport you are coming from, it's a breeze getting to the Windy City (pun intended).

Google Transit is a great tool to help you navigate your way around the city - walking, biking, public transportation-ing or driving.  Just remember that the Blue Line goes to and from O'Hare and the Orange Line goes to and from Midway.

Make sure you stop at Nuts on Clark when you're at the airport (located in both airports). Don't worry about trying to navigate the airport; your nose will guide you directly to Nuts on Clark. All the Hireologists agree, they have the best popcorn in the city.

History of McCormick Place

We know that as soon as you arrive at the largest convention center in North America, you're going to make a beeline towards booth 1172. After you visit the Hireologists, why not take a look around some of the 2,670,000 square feet that make up McCormick Place

Don't worry - organizers aren't expecting quite as many protesters as were present at the NATO Summit earlier this year.

Built between 1958-1960, McCormick Place is no stranger to remodels and additions. In 1967 the original building was destroyed in a fire.  Luckily, the Arie Crowne Theater survived the blaze and currently holds the title as Chicago's largest capacity, active theater. McCormick Place has seen an abundance of change throughout its life, but the name has remained in honor of Robert R. McCormick - the founding father of the convention center.

"But when I go to Chicago, I know I'm Home" - Hank Sauer

We may be a bit biased, but of the three largest cities in the United States, Chicago is the best.  Despite having a population of about three million, Chicago still has that small town heart.

Did you know...

  • The Harold Washington Library has over two-million books, making it the largest public library in the world

  • The Chicago River is the only river in the world that flows backwards

  • In 1885, Chicago's Home Insurance Company built the very first skyscraper

  • The first animal purchased by the Lincoln Park Zoo was a bear cub (for a mere ten dollars)

  • John Barleycorn and Green Mill, two prohibition-era speakeasies, are still in operation today
