3 Ways to Become the Company Everybody Wants to Work For

We talk a lot about attracting candidates on this blog and a question we often get asked is: how do we become a company that people want to work for? I'm sure the CEO's out there are dying to hear the words "When I graduate I want to work for Google, Apple, or [Insert your company name here]" from every millennial's mouth; but many don't understand how to get there. So today we are giving you 3 easy suggestions to jump start your company culture and become the business that everyone wants to work for!

Share The Vision

Everyone knows how great Apple's and Google's culture are and guess what, that's the idea! Smart companies promote their unique philosophies to raise awareness of the business and this is exactly what you should be doing. On Friday, we posted our weekly Fridays in the Lab video that featured Hireology Co-Founder, Michael Krasman discussing how to build one of the best places to work. In the video he highlights the importance of sharing a vision between the leadership team and the company's employees so it will guide everyday decision making and reflect upon your business values.

Encourage Levity

"Work Hard, Play Hard," is an overused but effective cliche to use when becoming a company that people want to work for. In his video on building the best place to work, Krasman says that "having fun, celebrating success, and those bonding moments are critical to long term success for any company." Consider our blog from a few weeks ago about the 5 Companies with the Best Benefits where we found that companies who are looking to attract fun, hardworking people should let their team behave as fun, hardworking people. So build an environment where your team can get to know eachother as friends instead of collegues and implement weekly activities where fun comes before work. Trust us, an office where people want to come to work is an office of engaged employees!

Hire the Right People

You're going to need giants if you're going to move mountains, and the only way to get those giants is by hiring them in the first place! Krasman's advice is to start a cycle of hiring A-players who will motivate and challenge your team and consistently scale the business.

Another suggestion is to seek out those fresh graduates as Mandy Gilbert of the Financial Post wrote in an article titled "Want to be the next Google? Start by cultivating a culture of innovation." She wrote, "hiring an intern at the top of her class, a new, untarnished graduate or relative newcomer to an industry can help generate an unbiased outlook on the possibilities for improving your product or service, as well as the experiences of your clients and other employees." When your known as a company that hires fresh talent you will be sought out by graduates looking to jump-start their careers therefore increasing your job candidates and giving you a bigger selection to choose from.

It's just like mixing chemicals in a lab: pour in a great company culture, stir in engaged employees, and shake in an office full of A-players and people might just start referring to you as the next Apple.
