The Candidate Experience: Interviewing for Hireology

Do you want to know what’s intimidating? Interviewing at a company that specializes in interviewing that’s what! When I first received a phone call from Chief Hireologist, Adam Robinson about the Marketing Coordinator position, I did a weird happy dance in celebration! Then I stopped, panicked and thought “wait, this company sells a hiring platform software for a living which means they are definitely going to use it to interview me!” Obviously, all is well that ends well, and I am sitting in the Hireology lab typing this blog post but let me jump back to the beginning of my time with the application and give those reading a better insight into the candidate’s view of the process.

SmartRank™ Survey

When I hit send on my application to Hireology I immediately received an email from Adam asking me to participate in a candidate survey. I took the 10 question survey no problem with little thought to what I was sending back and shut down my computer. I found out later that the survey is formally known as SmartRank, a way for the interviewer to gauge a candidate’s level of interest in the position and fit with the role. The survey is automatically generated and was actually scored and ranked. Those with higher scores generally have more interest in the position and are a better fit for the role!

Phone Screen

When I got the phone call from Adam and he began my phone interview, I had already done some Hireology research and assumed my answers were going to be scored. Adam asked me questions about what I liked and didn’t like about my current job, why I applied at Hireology, and about where I see my future. Towards the end of the interview I got the sense that I done well and mustered up the courage to ask when I could visit the office. He seemed pleased with my motivation and invited me to come in for an in-person interview the following week.

Achievements Interview

Now this is where my real experience with Hireology began! I sat down with Adam, Margot (Product Development Director) and Kevin (Business Development Director) for a panel interview. They asked me questions all the way from high school to my first full time job! I thought the high school questions seemed silly however they got me talking about how as a swimmer I was taught discipline and leadership. I was happy those values were uncovered during the interview because I never realized how much experience I had.

I could tell they liked me, but I was smart enough to know that their “gut feeling,” was not going to play a factor in hiring me like it had in other jobs! Sure enough I received an email from Adam the following night explaining that I scored very well on the second interview and “would I like to join him for a final interview?” UM DUH! After I was hired I discovered that the first in-office meeting was called "The Achievements Interview" and I scored high because I held myself accountable in situations, was a culture fit, and had past success in careers! 

Elements Interview

To prepare for my third and final interview I went online and Googled questions people ask during final interviews. Boy was that a mistake! I was blown away during the final interview by how deep they dug into my experiences during my last couple of positions. I had to provide examples of my behavior in parts of my internships and life that I hadn’t even thought of and provide answers to “what do you do on long flights?” This interview is appropriately titled "The Elements Interview," because it scopes out what elements the candidate has found success in compared to what elements the job calls for based on Hireology's research. Fortunately I came out of the interview with another high score and received a job offer shortly after. Woo hoo!  

Now as I sit here and reminisce about my first 2 weeks at Hireology, I think about how fortunate I am to have landed a great job but also how I am absolutely positive I was the right candidate for this role. I mean with 3 interviews and a SmartRank survey there is no way the numbers lie right? Adam didn’t just hire me because he “liked me” he hired me because of my high score on a well-researched interview set! The fact that I get along so well with the team isn't just luck, it's actually part of the interview process where the interviewers decide if the candidate is a good "culture fit." And that ladies and gentlemen is how Hireology predicts success!
