Automotive Dealerships: By The Numbers

Automotive News, the leading North American automotive business Web site, released an article this month that's packed with data covering all aspects of the auto world. From employment to money spent on advertising, here is the National Automobile Dealers Association's annual report on dealership sales and financial trends.

2008 - 53

Average Annual Dealership Payroll

2008 - $2.4 million
2009 - $2.4 million
2010 - $2.7 million
2011 - $3.0 million
2012 - $3.2 million
2013 - $3.4 million
2014 - $3.6 million

So, more jobs = higher payrolls

Dealership Employment

30% - Service and parts employees
26% - Technicians
24% - Managers and supervisors
20% - New and used vehicle salespeople

Advertising Spending

Average total spending per dealership

2013 - $477, 233
2014 - $494, 776

Ad spending per new unit sold

2013 - $616
2014 - $608

According to NADA Chief Economist Steven Szakaly, "dealership margins did not climb in part because of fierce industry competition. But keeping net profit margins stable is a testament to the efficiency of the retail auto industry."
